General editor In Europe, Hyperrealist painters included Austrian Gottfried Helnwein (b. 1948). He first used a hyperrealist technique to portray extremes of suffering. His later works tackle the theme of Nazism and the Holocaust, most famously in his "Epiphany" series (1996-98). In "Epiphany I" (Adoration of the Magi) SS officers with a mother and a child represent the Magi and the Virgin Mary and Jesus, with the child being admired as an example of Aryan perfection.
