How can one recount the Holocaust? That is certainly one of the major questions confronting any writer who tries to write on this theme. How is one to transform the horrific and inconceivable reality into fiction? How can one create a feeling of aunthenticity in the reader? How to disturb his emotional world without resorting to sentimental manipulation and how to avoid banality? ... ...

Wenn ich mir ansehe, wieviel Phantasie, Mühe und Fleiss diese Ebenbilder Gottes aufbringen, um Schmerzen zu verursachen, zu zerstören, zu verbrennen, zu zerbrechen, auszurotten, flachzuwalzen, schlechte Architektur und schwachsinnige Musik zu erzeugen, dann habe ich das Gefühl, bei dieser Schöpfung ist etwas schiefgelaufen, da ist etwas in die Hose gegangen.
Wenn ich von den Ebenbildern auf das Original schliessen soll - na Gute Nacht! Gott sei Dank gibt's Leute, die der Ansicht sind, dieser Mensch sei etwas, das überwunden werden sollte - wie Nietzsche, Buddha oder Walt Disney.
Ich muss gestehen - Ich hätte lieber einen Gott, der wie Donald Duck aussieht , als einen, der wie Adolf Hitler aussieht.

The portraits of Hendrix, Joplin, and Lennon are particulary stirring because their ghostlike treatment translates as a poetic and humble tribute to major creative forces whose lives were tragically cut short. As exemplified by the paintings of Helnwein, the purpose of a contemporary rock and roll portrait may extend well beyond biographical signification to stimulating reflection upon larger issues of social or political consequence. ...

Wenn eine Steigerung möglich ist, gelingt sie Kresnik, im Frühjahr 1988, mit seinem nächsten Stück: Macbeth. Natürlich erzählt Kresniks Choreographisches Theater die blutgetränkte Fabel Shakespeares nicht einfach nach. Es hat sich einiger Motive bemächtigt die es wieder und wieder repetiert, in großaufgerissenen, heftig blutenden Bildern und verstörten, irrsinnigen Aktionen, denen der Kresnik geistesverwandte Wiener Maler Gottfried Helnwein als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner lediglich drei Farben gegeben hat: das Schwarz des Todes, das Weiß der Schlachthofwände und Leichentücher und das Rot des Blutes. Das Drama von Königsmord und Wahnsinn erscheint bei Kresnik wie durch den Fleischwolf gedreht: ein Hackstück, roh und triefend von Blut. Bis kurz vor Schluß der Aufführung gibt es keinerlei Entwicklung; nur Ansichten und Variationen von Tod, Mord und Irresein, umgesetzt in bohrende Bilder und verstörende Aktionen. Die Welt als Schlachthaus, abendfüllend und ohne Perspektivenwechsel, ohne Hoffnungsschimmer. Die Figuren heißen zwar "Banquo", "Duncan", "Macbeth" und "Macduff" samt zugehörigen Ladies; auch die drei Hexen, die mit ihren Einflüsterungen die originale Tragödie erst in Gang setzen, sind vorhanden als Mischung aus BDM-Mädchen, Militärpolizistinnen und Go-go-Girls: hübsche Harpyien des Grauens, die das monogam in sich kreisende, mit Blut geschmierte Geschehen antreiben und kontrollieren. ...

Gottfried Helnwein's classic yet unnerving images transform sentimental representations of childhood into portraits of individual subjects frozen at the moment of suffering. His photo-paintings pirouette on the fine line between chocolate box pictures/excessive sentimentality and the cost to children of being treated as commodities, of suffering emotional or physical pain at a grown-up's hands.
High pictorial and technical values create compositions that recall contemporary cinema and seventeenth-century painting, expanding the treatment of time into epic. This apparent grandiosity plays against the immediacy of each suffering subject, underlining the different experience of time in childhood. Small hurts can devastate when you're a child. Big hurts stay with you for years, as survivors of Hitler's Anschluss testify.
Now, in the age of virtual use and abuse of children, Helnwein's insistence on valuing the humanity and charm of the littlest, the least powerful, offers a counterpoint to claims that suffering counts most when you're grown-up.
