Gottfried Helnwein’s Angel Sleeping awakened in Waterford
Co. Waterford, Ireland — 06 Sep. 2007 — Described as controversial, provocative and undoubtedly larger than life, the works of Austrian born, Waterford-based artist Gottfried Helnwein are sure not to disappoint when launched at Greyfriers Municipal Gallery in Waterford on Friday, September, 7th.
As part of the Waterford Fringe Festival, Helnwein is one of the many artists exhibiting at this years’ festival. Born and educated in Vienna, Helnwein now resides with his wife and children at Castle de la Paor, Kilsheelan, Co. Waterford.
The work of Helnwein has been exhibited worldwide and in such prestigious settings as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the State Russian Museum, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne and even in the homes of Sean Penn and Nicholas Cage.
Helnwein’s “Angel Sleeping” exhibition can best be described as “death in the image world”. The stark and sometimes disturbing images demand the viewer to investigate the contemporary images of death within a sociological, philosophical and historical approach.
According to Liam Rellis, Director of the Waterford Fringe Festival, “Warhol has been described as the Pre-Helnwein. Gottfried Helnwein’s work has a stark and deep quality that cannot be ignored. He was an obvious choice to exhibit at the Waterford Fringe Festival as firstly he is seen as a local and secondly, by exhibiting his work here, it puts Waterford on a platform with the great art capitals of the world such as New York, Munich and Beijing.
We really are delighted to have an internationally acclaimed artist such as Helnwein participating in the festival.”
