Bis heute spielen sie beim Glyndebourne Festival regelmäßig die von dort 1975 in die Welt gereiste Variante mit dem Bühnenbild von David Hockney, der vor allem Hogarths Interieurs nachbaute. In Salzburg hat Jörg Immendorff ausgestattet, in Jürgen Flimms Hamburger Deutung Gottfried Helnwein. Die letzte spektakuläre Inszenierung von Robert Lepage verfrachtete Strawinsky glamourös nach Hollywood.

Voller Versteigerungskalender im Dorotheum: Nach den "Alten Meister" folgen am 16. Dezember Vertreter der modernen und zeitgenössischen Kunst. Unter den Hammer kommen u.a. Werke von Chagall und Monet.
Hier finden sich Werke etwa von Gottfried Helnwein, dessen "Portrait Jean Genet" aus Kölner Privatbesitz auf 22.000 bis 30.000 Euro geschätzt wird. Auch ein Ausschnitt aus einem monumentalen Seerosenwerk, das Claude Monet in einer depressiven Phasen zerschnitt, findet sich zu einem Schätzpreis von 18.000 bis 20.000 Euro unter den Angeboten. ...

Desde una edad temprana, el joven Helnwein vio en la represión e intolerncia propias de la educación católica un paralelismo del fascismo. Después de abandonar la escuela por esos motivos, fue admitido en el Institute of Higher Graphic Instruction, conocido por tener tendencias "experimentales". Como protesta ante la rigidez de la institución, cortó su mano con una navaja y dibujó a Adolf Hitler con su propia sangre. EI acto le valió la expulsión, así como una clara conciencia sobre el poder de una imagen. Terminó sus estudios en la Academia de Artes de Viena.

In the coming months, visitors can look forward to screenings of “The Silence of Innocence,” a documentary on artist Gottfried Helnwein, who is the subject of a career-spanning survey at the Crocker from Jan. 29 through April 24.

O El amigo americano (de Wim Wenders), Ruleta china (de Fassbinder), Corazonada (de Francis Ford Coppola), Barry Lyndon (de Stanley Kubrick), Los hombres duros no bailan (Norman Mailer), A quemarropa (Boorman). Bagdad Café (de Percy Adlon), Los halcones de la noche (de Bruce Malmuth, en inglés Nighthawks, igual que el cuadro, o El bulevar de los sueños rotos, de Gottfried Helnwein. En todos esos films se reconoce a Hopper. Como también en Tess, de Polanski, donde el maletín (¿de médico?) que aparece junto a una cama es idéntico al que está al pie de la Muchacha que lee una carta en malla roja.

In "Ich ist ein anderer - Die Kunst der Selbstdarstellung" zeigt das Landesmuseum Niederösterreich in St. Pölten ab Samstag (25.9.) 350 Arbeiten von fast 80 Künstlern zum Thema Porträt und Selbstporträt.
Auf 1.200 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche wird den Fragen nach Außenseitertum und Selbststilisierung von Künstlern nachgegangen. Kuratorin der bis 26. April 2011 angesetzten, auf Basis der eigenen Sammlung des Hauses konzipierten Schau ist Alexandra Schantl. Der Titel "Ich ist ein anderer" entstammt einem Zitat des Dichters Arthur Rimbaud, kunsthistorischer Ausgangspunkt ist Egon Schieles Selbstporträt von 1910, erläutert das Museum in einer Aussendung. Im letzten Teil der Schau geht es um das geschundene, sterbliche, heilige und heroische Ich: mit Gottfried Helnweins bandagierten Kindern und Werner Reiterers digitaler, erbarmungslos den Countdown anzeigender Lebensuhr.

Helnwein creates hallucinatory images of reverie, and it is with powerful gestures of light and shadow that he seduces the viewer even as he depicts the aftermath of violence, brutality and suffering. His paintings often depict children as victims of unexplained violence, representing them as archetypal characters in a theatre of cruelty perpetrated by unseen forces. Equally mesmerizing are the artist’s personifications of Mickey Mouse and anime figures, casting them in his on-going exploration of psychological and sociological anxiety and society’s darkest impulses.

Throughout his career, Helnwein has glided easily between watercolor, oil and installation work, but his big subject has always been childhood, and not the happy sort. With titles like ‘‘The Murmur of the Innocents’’ and ‘‘God of Sub-Humans,’’ these works — executed with obsessive, old-master-worthy technique — can be as bludgeoning as, say, a Rammstein riff, but you can’t take your eyes off them.
