Those who have used the same or multiple forms of the image many times over many years include Lichtenstein, Helnwein, Oldenburg, Pensato, Ospina, and Chagoya. Some have used the image more persistently than others have.

The films themselves range from documents of performances to highly structured experimental films. The Art of Destruction concerns the main protagonists of the movement and their own particular brands of performance/art/terrorism as well as a discussion of the major films and their influences. Each member is given space for biography (and there are some bizarre backgrounds to be sure) and key performances, all amply illustrated in disturbing black and white. Rather than just a catalogue of broken taboos the VAG are seen as natural extensions of both Dadaism and the "Happening" scene of the '50s, but one distinctly Austrian in the way that it rebelled against a harshly censorious government whom the performers saw as intrinsically unrepentant of its recent fascist past. This adds greater weight to the performances than perhaps the later New York transgressive movement, and their influence can be seen in everything from Helnwein paintings to mainstream Marilyn Manson videos. ...

J’ai été impressionné par le travail des Surréalistes en premier lieu, puis par des gens comme Hans Bellmer, Unica Zürn, Henri Michaux, Gabrielle Wittkop, Antonin Artaud, Sade, mais aussi par Giger, Helnwein et bien sûr Witkin. 1948: Nace en Viena
1969/73: Estudia pintura en la Academia de Fine Art en Viena y realiza sus
primeras exposiciones para audiencias pequeñas.
1979: Protesta contra el psiquiatra forense número uno de Austria, Dr. Gross, que admitió en una entrevista que en la era Nazi, él había envenenado a centenares de niños.
1985: Se muda a Alemania, vive y trabaja en un castillo cerca de Cologne, comienzan a producir los cuadros que se componen de varias piezas, Helnwein examina de cerca áreas del taboo y aborda términos tales como arte sub-humana, degenerada y vida indigna de vida. Gottfried Helnwein (born October 8, 1948 in Vienna) is an Austrian fine artist, photographer, and performance artist.

Helnwein studied at the University of Visual Art in Vienna (Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Wien). He was awarded the Master-class prize (Meisterschulpreis) of the University of Visual Art, Vienna, the Kardinal-König prize and the Theodor-Körner prize. His early work consists mainly of hyper-realistic watercolors, depicting wounded children, as well as performances - often with children - in public spaces. Helnwein is a conceptual artist, concerned primarily with psychological and sociological anxiety, historical issues and political topics. As a result of this, his work is often considered provocative and controversial. He has worked as a painter, draftsman, photographer, muralist, sculptor and performance artist, using a wide variety of techniques and media. Helnwein is also known for his stage and costume designs of theater, ballet and opera productions. amongst them Staatsoper Hamburg, Volksbühne Berlin and Los Angeles Opera. ...
