Helnwein, un creador austríaco que viene molestando a la gente tranquila y conforme desde hace más de tres décadas, en su primera etapa hizo fotos de chicos atados, heridos, que perturbaron a las buenas gentes de sus latitudes. Y en 1979, como gesto de protesta por la designación del verdugo nazi Gross, que envenenó a cientos de chicos judíos, envió a los medios una carta con la foto de un chico muerto, la cabeza sobre un platode comida tóxica. Más tarde, a fines de los ‘80, realizó una instalación de 4 metros por 100 (sí, una cuadra), para recordar el comienzo del Holocausto el 9/11/38 con una fila de enormes fotos de chicos que evocaban una tristísima marcha camino del campo de concentración. ...

Le personnage de la pochette est tout aussi mystérieux, qui s'y cache? Toi-même?
En fait, c'est une toile d'un artiste autrichien qui s'appelle Gottfried Helnwein. Cette image m'a toujours parlé. Ça me fait penser à du Francis Bacon. Mais là aussi, c'est une image qui laisse une porte ouverte à toute interprétation. La seule chose que l'on devine, c'est que le personnage a une forme humaine. Pour le reste, est-il défiguré? Brûlé? Caché par la pénombre? Une toile qui instaure un malaise. Et le plus grave, c'est que le type te fixe. On ne peut pas ne pas réagir à ce genre d'image. C'est en effet dans ce but que j'ai utilisé cette image; pour représenter le disque. Moi-même par extension. Carpigstroke, c'est un autoportrait. (Car=Auto, Pig=Porc, Stroke=Trait). Oui, je sais, je vais chercher loin, mais comme la pochette et les titres, j'avais l'intitulé de l'album bien avant que je commence à enregistrer quoi que ce soit… ...

Oui, effectivement, il s'est souvent servi du "hors normes" pour travailler. Je n'ai pas été étonné d'apprendre que le travail de Weegee (tu sais, le photographe américain des faits divers, ds les années 40) l'a inspiré, à la base. Pour ce qui est de Gottfried Helwein, c'est un artiste très prolifique, mais que je connais mal.
