On Thursday I had photo class in the morning, then art history class. For our Thursday excursion for art history, we first went to the National Museum of Modern Art where we studied Kupka and his abstract art. This was the first time in my life that I appreciated abstract art and it's beauty. The second part of the class, we went to the Rudolfinum to see an exhibit entitled Angels Sleeping by Gottfried Helnwein. I was in complete shock at his beautiful work. ...

The Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague continues its sombre ‘n’ sophisticated exhibition programme with a beautiful Helnwein show entitled Angels Sleeping.

Let us answer by means of an amusing anecdote. Several years ago we were walking down the Kantstrasse in Berlin when a speeding automobile ran up onto the sidewalk, struck us from behind, and then proceeded to us several hundred feet up the steet. Helnwein was behind the wheel. Then, when we finally came out of our coma, Helnwein burst into our hospital room and struck us a glancing blow with a croquet mallet. Finally, Helnwein marked our release from the hospital by hiring a mime troupe to beat us up. And not in mime, either. With their real fists. Helnwein called the resulting piece Someone Has to Suffer For My Art, and It's Not Going to Be Me. ...

A mais recente série de trabalhos (óleos e acrílicos sobre tela) do austríaco Gottfried Helnwein chama-se "The Disasters of War" [aqui se reproduz Untitled (The Disasters of War 3)] e esteve exposta nos EUA, em São Francisco, na galeria Modernism. Trata-se de uma explícita homenagem a Francisco Goya e à sua série de gravuras "Los Desastres de la Guerra", pintada como reacção à invasão da Espanha pelas tropas francesas no perído 1808-1814 [em baixo: "Esto es peor"]. ...

Apostando, uma vez mais, num fascinante equilíbrio entre a precisão realista e a sugestão alegórica, Helnwein produz aquilo que talvez pudéssemos chamar "frescos abstractos". Por um lado, a precisão do detalhe e a sua intensidade dramática aproximam-nos da matéria e da dor que nela se pode conter; por outro lado, a teatralidade das composições abre-nos as portas de um mundo quase utópico, ferido pela própria irrisão da sua humanidade. ...

Helnwein为一般人所知也许皆因为他为曼森专辑所设计的封面和CD彩页。扭曲变形的彩色人面封面和CD所附带的“孩童和枪”的彩页，似乎怀着恶意和颠覆在向一切冷冷微笑。而这一系列的造型设计，成为了后来美国校园枪机案后曼森遭受指责的直接原因。
Helnwein出生于维也纳。1969年到1973年在维也纳Fine Art学院学习油画。观察Helnwein的艺术创作，会发现他的作品有这样几个特点，首先是他的作品集中于表现孩童。他从学院毕业的71年开始到90年代的油画作品大部分都是一些缠着绷带，带着缝线伤口向你诡异微笑的孩童，也许原版的格林童话应该让他来做插图，而NICK CAVE应该采用他的早期油画来做插页，咧开撕裂缝合的嘴角，那是小小的孩子渗入骨髓的恐惧和恶意。他的摄象作品则很多都是儿童的各中头像。有很多也是他油画的模特形象。 ...
