Help us find visual, aural, metaphors that will let others understand the importance of engagement in this process. Look at Helnwein's painting under Visual Sociology. I left it up. What was Helnwein saying? Why was he willing to offend. Why do Beau and Michael want to shake us up? How are those things related? Why did one of my students make a giant box that when opened had a lovely smiling face inside that said "F^&* the Patriot Act"?? Isn't that a lot like what Helnwein and Kiefer and Beuys were doing? Maybe saying "wake up and look at what you're doing?" ...

Last night was the opening of Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein's new show at Modernism, Inc.
It was the first opportunity that I have had to meet this brilliant artist in person.
For those not familiar with Helnwein's work, prepare for a jolt. His work is not exactly offensive, nor is it not completely shocking.
It is unnerving. It is bold. It is fresh, polished, clean, and provoking. ...

While he wouldn't discuss it in detail, he did allow that Celebritarian has been incubating for seven years and that "it represents the only place where art can possibly go after surrealism and Dada. There's an array of people involved — from Gottfried Helnwein, Steven Klein, and Anthony Silva, I think it's probably the only valid attempt at an art movement since the surrealists. It's something that should be feared, but it's something I can't imagine not living up to its expectations. ...

Se te olvidó mencionar dos de los peores cuadros de Hundertwasser…, y la verdad es que, viendo un poco más de la obra de Helnwein, lo que me pareció vibrante y original en el museo se me figura ahora repetitivo. Me decían que el hombre lamentaba haber permitido a los Scorpions usar su autorretrato, pero no deja de crear versiones y actualizaciones del mismo; temo que tienes razón y el único motivo de que eso fuera exhibido fue el “prestigio” de la colección. Una pena. ...

Por otro lado, también estuve en el Marco (el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo), guiado de formas distintas por Julio Salinas y, de nuevo, Bef. Allí pude ver exposiciones de los mexicanos Marco Arce y Rodolfo Morales, más el Autorretrato de Gottfried Helnwein en el que se basa la ilustración de un álbum famoso de los venerables (aunque pésimos) Scorpions…

Aucune disposition d'âme n'a occupé si longtemps l'Occident. Les Grecs l'appelaient la bile noire (melangkholia, qui donnera le mot mélancolie). Aristote s'étonnait que cette humeur réputée néfaste touche la plupart des hommes d'exception. Elle est par tradition cause de souffrance et de folie, et sa désignation comme "maladie sacrée" implique une dualité. Les artistes de l'Antiquité la représentèrent sous la forme d'êtres pensifs, tête inclinée posée sur la main, regard perdu où se devine une sourde douleur. Au fil des siècles, l'image du mélancolique changera peu - 'le Portrait du Dr Gachet', de Van Gogh, ou la sculpture hyperréaliste de l'Australien Ron Mueck ('Big Man', 2000) respectent cette iconographie. Devenue saturnienne, puis reclassée dans la grande famille des dépressions, la mélancolie a toujours inspiré les artistes qui, pour en être victimes dans les périodes de doute et d'impuissance, connaissent son charme mortifère. Avec plus de 200 oeuvres, l'exposition se propose de vous introduire à cette richesse encore mal connue et met en évidence le rôle essentiel joué par la mélancolie dans les différentes formes de la création artistique en Europe, de Dürer à Goya en passant par Bruegel, Bosh, Arcimboldo, Watteau, La Tour, Füssli, Delacroix, Rodin, Munch, Baudelaire, Artaud, De Chirico, Picasso, Hopper... ...

I took those two pics (with white and black mickey manson) cut them in halves and put a white and a black one together, to my sursprise i didnt even had to do much cuz they fitted perfectly.. congrats to Helnwein for those great pictures :-P ...

Die Ludwiggalerie im Schloß Oberhausen mag bereits die zweite Präsentationsstätte von Gottfried Helnweins Ausstellung "Beautiful Children" sein, doch sie ist erste Wahl, was die Präsentation betrifft. In den großen Räumen verteilen sich rund drei Dutzend Werke, darunter eine kleine Auswahl von "Klassikern" der siebziger Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts, als der Wiener Maler mit seinen typisch deformierten oder verbundenen Gesichtern bekannt wurde, und Reprisen älterer Schlüsselwerke wie etwa die in ihrer Brutalität berückend originalgetreue Micky Maus ("Midnight Mickey"), die hier in einer Version aus dem Jahr 2001 vertreten ist.
Doch das sind Bilder, die längst in die popkulturelle Walhalla eingegangen sind. Deshalb ist es erfreulich, daß diese erste größere deutsche Einzelausstellung seit vielen Jahren den Schwerpunkt eindeutig auf neue Projekte legt: auf "The Golden Age" etwa, wo der Popstar Marilyn Manson in wechselnden Masken das Modell für Helnweins Kamera abgibt ...
